Spring is right around the corner, which means it’s time to get your UTV out of storage! But before you hit the trails, you’ll want to get your vehicle ready for riding. We’ve provided some tips to help you prep your UTV, so read on to learn more. Contact us at Sky Powersports Sanford if you need help with parts or services before your next adventure.

Cleaning

Pull your UTV out of storage and remove the cover. Depending on how well it was stored, it may need a good cleaning. You can spray the exterior with a garden hose to get rid of any dust or dirt that may have accumulated. After you’ve washed and rinsed your vehicle, wipe away excess water. For maximum protection, give it a good waxing.

Damage Inspection

Even if your UTV was properly and safely stored, you should still inspect it for damage before riding it. Start by checking the fuel lines for signs of damage. You’ll also want to get a good look at the power steering cables, belts, and electrical wiring. If you find any cracks, leaks, or signs of excessive wear, make the necessary repairs or replacements.

Check the Battery

Proper battery care is vital as you get your UTV ready for spring. Confirm that the battery is adequately topped off with distilled water. If you spot signs of corrosion, gently scrub the battery terminals with a mixture of water and baking soda. Make sure the battery is fully charged and that the voltage and amperage levels are correct. Apply a light coat of battery grease to the terminals and ensure all connections are tight.

Inspect Fuel and Oil

If any fuel or oil was left behind in your UTV while it was in storage, drain it out. Add fresh fuel and oil based on the manufacturer’s recommendations. Remember to use a fuel stabilizer to help get rid of any deposits that may have accumulated.

Check the Spark Plugs

Check the spark plugs for signs of rust or moisture and clean them. When putting the spark plugs back in (or replacing them), refer to the owner’s manual for proper gap sizing. If the gap is not set correctly, you’ll experience poor engine performance.
