Buying Youth ATVs
ATVs are great for exploring the outdoors and conquering the wild, but they tend to be one-seaters. That means that if you want to bring the kids along, you might need to buy them their own ATVs. We here at Sky Powersports Sanford want to make sure you and your child make the most out of mudding, so we’ve put together a brief buying guide for youth ATVs. If you want to know more, or if you would like to see the youth ATVs we have for sale, contact our store in Sanford, Florida, today!
The Right Size
There are a lot of considerations when buying your child their own ATV, but the first needs to be the ATV’s size. Make sure the model you’re looking at is a kids’ ATV specifically designed for youth, first, then have your child sit on a few to see which is best for them. Help them make sure they can reach the controls without stretching or straining, and ensure they’re comfortable on the seat.
Kids from ages six and up can typically handle an ATV ride with the right training. Kids under six years old should not, under any circumstances, ride an ATV. For children between six and eleven years of age, any engine below 70cc tends to work well. Preteens and teenagers should be able to handle any engine that’s below 90cc, so long as they know how to ride it and are comfortable on a less powerful model than yours.
Safety Precautions
Any child under the age of 14 should be supervised at all times when on an ATV. Ride alongside them while they’re learning to ride so you can demonstrate the correct speed and remind them how to use controls if they forget. Children will, of course, need the same safety equipment as any adult rider, including a well-fitting helmet, boots, gloves, and long sleeves and pants. Chest plates can be valuable extra protection in case of an impact.
Youthful Energy
Before you mount up, go over general safety rules with your child.. As you do, remember that children respond to danger differently depending on a number of factors. Ensure that your child knows that high speeds and risky maneuvers and turns should be worked up to, and make sure to help them feel rewarded while they ride at their appropriate skill level. For some kids, the roar of the engine and the novelty of the experience will be enough, but for others, they might want to see just how crazy things can get. Keep a close eye on them until you know where they fall on that spectrum!
