ATV Mudding Essentials
Spring showers bring May flowers, but more importantly, they bring every ATV owner’s favorite type of riding: mudding! An ATV can probably tackle most mudding rides as is, but there are a few accessories that will make your next trip to the mudhole even better. We here at Sky Powersports Sanford want you to be as well-equipped as possible, so we’ve put together a list of ATV mudding essentials. The Right Outfit
Safety should be your number one concern with any joy ride, and the right riding gear makes a difference. First, make sure you’re wearing a well-fitting and full-coverage helmet. Mud might be soft, but there’s always a chance there are rocks or other obstacles hiding in it. Make sure the helmet is crash-test certified so you know it will actually protect you, and we recommend a full-face helmet.
You should also wear durable clothing that covers all parts of your body. That means long sleeved shirts and long pants. You’ll also want gloves to help you keep control and protect your hands, and sturdy boots that go above your ankle.
Snorkel Kits
Now that you’re all geared up and safe, it’s time to protect your ATV as well. The biggest danger in mudding is the risk of moisture getting into your exhaust pipe or finding some other way into your engine. Depending on the season, location, and weather, there are times you might even find half your ATV submerged in mud! If water gets into your exhaust system or engine, though, it could kill your machine entirely.
To avoid this, we recommend snorkel kits. These provide extended air intakes, extended CVT inlets, and outlet exhausts for your ATV to keep all the parts dry that need to be dry.
Mud Tires
This might be an obvious suggestion, but if you’re going to be driving in mud, mud tires are in order. These provide enhanced traction in slick and wet environments, and they also tend to be bigger to avoid sinking faster than you want to. They also have spaced-out lugs that help your tires grip the mud better. Just don’t drive them on hard-packed dirt or pavement, since this can damage those lugs.
Mudguard Kits
Similar to the snorkel kits, mudguard kits help your ATV deal with mud a bit better. They act much like mud flaps might on larger vehicles, adding plastic fender extensions that help reduce spray and slightly improve the protection for your own vehicle. These are especially great if you’re traveling in a group and don’t want to drench the folks around you.
