A Beginner’s Guide to Hauling a UTV
A trailer is an excellent option to choose when you want to safely transport your UTV from one place to another. Your side-by-side will remain secure as you head to your destination. If you’ve never done this before, it’s to get overwhelmed. However, it’s relatively simple once you get the hang of it. The experts at Sky Powersports Sanford have put together this guide to safe UTV towing. Give us a call or stop by our dealership in Sanford, FL for more information. We can also assist with your parts, service, and storage needs.
Preparing to Tow
First and foremost, you’ll want to check the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of your tow vehicle. This number will let you know how much weight you’re able to safely tow. You’ll want to keep in mind this includes the weight of any cargo or passengers. Not all trucks are equipped to handle UTV trailers, so be sure to check before you begin the process.
Hook Up Your Trailer
It’s much easier to hitch side-by-side trailers on flat ground. It’s not impossible to hitch on a slope, but it will take much more time and effort. You’ll start by positioning the trailer tongue so it’s directly above the ball hitch. Reverse until the latch is under the tongue, then attach the tongue to the ball joint. Before you go any further, be absolutely sure that it’s secure. Next, attach the chains to your tow vehicle. This is an added safety precaution that’ll prevent your trailer from becoming disconnected.
When it’s time to load up, you’ll want to align your vehicle with the ramp and slowly ride up. Once you’ve loaded your vehicle, you’ll want to be intentional with how you distribute the weight. Generally speaking, you should have 60% of the weight in the front, 40% in the rear, and 10% on the hitch. If you place too much weight in the front, you’ll strain the tow vehicle. Too much weight in the rear could snap the hitch.
Drive Safely While Towing
Remember that there are some basic safe driving practices you’ll want to familiarize yourself with. First of all, you need to take it slow and easy. Avoid traveling at speeds that exceed 60 mph because trailer trailers aren’t built for this. Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the one in front of you, which is important because coming to a stop won’t be quick or easy in most cases.
